Carbon Neutral Olympics?
Hey Folks,
The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) is putting the pressure on John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC), to make the 2010 Winter Games carbon neutral. I recently added my signature, along with 70 other athletes, to reinforce the incredible importance such an action holds. Now it’s your turn…
When I dream of the future, there is no issue of greater concern than that of climate change. VANOC has an opportunity to inspire the world by taking action, and frankly responsibility, for the immense carbon footprint such an event leaves in it’s wake.
I am certain that in hindsight, such a decision will seem obvious to them; lets make sure they don’t have any regrets. Taking responsibility for the environment is of utmost important, and we need to let them know we believe this, and feel strongly about it. So please follow this link, and lend your name to the cause, then pass it along to your friends. It’s simple, it’s fast, and if acted on, will have a long lasting and far reaching effect on the world.
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I do love your riding and you do inspire me to ride. I also like your positive attitude with both kids and your inspirational messages.
However, You like many others have been blindsided by misinformation concerning the environment. I hope you do some further research and come to see the truth that increased co2 is not the cause of “global warming” but rather a by product that follows it at calculable distances.
Dont get me wrong I love our planet, dont litter, respect nature but the whole environmental movement has been taken over and is now a commercial enterprise employing thousands and generating hundreds of millions of dollars in sales.
Peace
P.s. If you’d like to talk more about this feel free to email me at b.minogue@utoronto.ca as I would love to reach someone who has such a public forum and can spread the truth to others
Hi B,
Thanks for your concern, I appreciate and respect your opinion and you taking the time.
I have delved deep in to the issue of climate change. I have been researching it for years, even before it became mainstream. I have looked well beyond the fear that mainstream media has generated around the issue and I am savvy to the various opportunist greenwashers out there. I have read a multitude of viewpoints on the issue, and studied the background of the various authors. Most importantly though, I have looked within, and I have listened to my heart. I have meditated in the sunshine on the issues, and have combined all of this to stand where I am on the issue. I worry about the divide climate change has caused, and I sense you are too, your words were gentle and genuine, and I appreciate that.
I cannot help but to feel the way I do, it comes from deep within. To quote Thich Naht Hanh in a recent book of his, “We human beings have always singled ourselves out from the rest of the natural world. We classify other animals and living beings as “nature,” a thing apart from us, and we act as if we’re somehow separate from it. Then we ask, “How should we deal with nature?” We should deal with nature the same way we should deal with ourselves: nonviolently. Human beings and nature are inseparable. Just as we should not harm ourselves, we should not harm nature. To harm nature is to harm ourselves, and vice versa.”
B, you care for the environment, so whether climate change is primarily human-made (as is my opinion), or not (perhaps yours), I think we can agree that there are some atrocious crimes being committed to our natural world, irreversible damage to the oceans, to the forests, to our ancient underground water supplies, and to species of all variety. I believe these terrible realities are a direct reflection of our collective human nature.
I am deeply concerned but not fearful; and I don’t quite know how to proceed with my current understanding. I do know that the only way to influence the change in human nature I referred to above is by changing my self and my actions, and with this knowledge I will proceed with as much integrity as possible.
Thanks for triggering my response, had some of this stuff on my mind lately, and it was a good excuse to share it.
Much love,
Ryan
Ryan,
Could you share with us your bike set up. I would especially like to know what style and model brakes you use. I think I speak for many!
Thanks,
Brad
Hi Ryan !
I totally agree with you about global warming and the emissions of co2.
My husband and I are vegan for the respect of the animals, the people and the planet.
We are both admirers of your great skills that my husband is trying to learn. He is rather good at it, even if it takes a lot of time and patience !
I wanted to seize the occasion to wish you a very happy birthday from the French Alpes where we live !
I was also wondering if you were planning on coming to France this Spring or this Summer. Our area is very reknowned for downhill mountain biking (we live close to Les Gets), so why not organizing a demonstration of trials ?
Hope to see you soon !
Peace & Harmony
Maud
I am completely agree with your views about global warming.
