Hi folks,

Just wanted to share with you some upcoming happenings I'm involved with.

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival:
I'll be performing a short trials demo on stage, followed by a video segment retrospective interspersed with a few thoughts about my progression through the years. For details on the presentation, and the other presenters and films that evening, click here.
I'm pumped that my buddy Bjorn Enga will be there to share his experiences producing the Kranked Films. Hope you can make it!

This is a fantastic event, I don’t know a city that is more excitable about bikes than Seattle. I'll be doing trials demos and leading yoga classes. If all goes well, this will be the first event using my new demo obstacles and trailer that are being built right now. If you're in the area, come on by!

Ride and Reach with Ryan Leech:
I am really excited about this offering. The mountain bike trails in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories, Canada, are absolutely heavenly. I have teamed up with Boreale Mountain Biking to offer a custom Mt. Bike and Yoga retreat full of skill progression, epic rides, gourmet food, and yoga sessions. If you’re interested, join me for a week 'o fun way up North!
Here are some additional thoughts and details from my perspective about the trip.

Hi Folks!

The approach of the InterBike Trade Show and Convention in Las Vegas acts as the wind down of one riding season and the beginning of another. Over the past year, my goal was to lighten my load of demos and focus on other areas of my career; while that was more or less the case, I still managed to perform 58 shows, and many of those were Trials of Life school presentations. Mix in a variety of sponsorship obligations, magazine articles, photo-shoots, advocacy work, and filming sessions, and all of a sudden a year blows by!

Some may know that playing yoga has been an important background activity of mine for the past five years, but recently it has come to the foreground through my desire to share the benefits of the practice with others. The 200 hour yoga teacher training program I embarked on finishes the day before InterBike starts, and I’ll be throwing myself in to the teaching world by offering a “Free Morning Yoga Session with Ryan Leech” on Sept. 23, starting at 7:30am in Casanova Room 602, at the Sands Convention Centre. Come on in for a morning session, but be warned, I may make you sweat a bit!

I leave tomorrow for Ucluelet, BC, the sister city of Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This is the venue for the rest of my yoga teacher training. Though I won’t have my bike with me (except for my pavement bike to get around-that counts I guess), I may get out in the waves for some surfing…actually, it might be required by my teacher Eoin Finn who is huge in to surfing. Should be ten days of intensity and chillosity (is that word)…two things every yoga practice should have!

If you have some good ideas about a trials show demo set-up, please pass your ideas or drawing along to me at trials@ryanleech.com; after four years of shows on the same stuff, I’m excited to mix it up with a new trailer and a fresh obstacle design. I need the obstacles to have a quick set up and tear down time as one of my plans for 2010 is to launch another two month long Canadian Trials of Life school tour, on which I’ll be visiting and performing at multiple schools everyday. Whew!

Project Blue Sky is up and running and looking good! If you’re curious about how much of an effect your carbon friendly modes of transportation have, then please sign up and start using the handy dandy kilometer counting widget. You can embed the widget in your blog, or link to it in facebook, it’s pretty cool. The goal of this athlete driven, student directed project is to inspire concrete action to fight climate change, that concrete goal is one billion kilometers of carbon friendly travel which incidentally would balance the amount of CO2 emitted indirectly from the Vancouver Olympic Games. It’s a big goal, so if you ride to work, or take the bus once-in-a-while, log it up at Project Blue Sky!

Happy September Everyone!

There has been an endless stream of exciting projects, adventures, and challenges this year; and that’s just what I wanted, to mix it up a bit.

Norco Bikes has their 2010 product launch next week. For most riders, this would be a drool fest, having the chance to test ride and learn about all the latest bikes and specs, but it’s reserved for only their top dealers and invited media, and factory team riders! I'll be doing a show, leading some mountain bike rides and an urban ride, and giving a chat about the Fluid LT (my bike of choice).

I have been brainstorming with another key sponsor of mine, Shimano, about a new project that will involve five of their top team riders and one of the most talented film crews, that’s all I can say though;-)

In a couple weeks I'll be heading up to the Yukon to film with The Ride Guide TV show. We'll be hosted by the leading mountain bike adventure company in Whitehorse called Boreale Mountain Biking; they’ll be spoiling us with the best trails and some fine accomadation in their famous yurts, I love yurts, maybe because it’s fun to say out loud, yurt. If you live in those parts, come out to my Trials of Life presentation on July 24th.

A couple days ago, I teamed up with two Olympic medal holders David Calder (rowing) and Stephanie Dixon (swimming) to launch ProjectBlueSky.ca. Using the internets social networking power, we hope to inspire people to use alternative modes of transportation (walk, ride, transit) instead of their car. The goal is to save 1,000,000,000 kilometers of car driving by the time the 2010 Olympics finishes. Incidentally, One billion km’s is equivalent to the 190,000 tonnes of CO2 which is being emmited indirectly from the games. VANOC has offset their direct emissions which is fantastic news, but Project Blue Sky is all about preventing and reducing emissions. Please sign up at Project Blue Sky today, we need everybody’s participation!!

Twitter twitter twitter twitter, I guess I’m a twittering twit. Check it out if you like….

The YogaThon is this Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium (UBC). Sign up to help raise money for children affected by HIV and give them the opportunity to go to Summer Camp. I actually had the opportunity to visit Camp Moomba, the summer camp these kids go to, to do a trials show and teach some yoga. I had a blast, the kids loved the bike riding of course, and that gave me some cred for the yoga sessions. The kids probably won't start doing yoga, but perhaps later in life they'll think back to this camp and consider giving it another try. If you can’t go or don't live nearby, please consider donating some money to the cause. I’m on a fundraising team captained by Eoin Finn called the Bliss Army, you can donate on our behalf here!

Talking about Eoin, I was only able to teach yoga to these kids because of the teacher training course I'm halfway through. I wrote an article about my experience during the first 100 hours of this course, and reflected on what the ancient practice of yoga looks like in our modern world.

After about four months of volunteer work, the Port Moody Rotary Trials Park is now open with fresh lines and challenges. The highlight is an obstacle my dad and I designed which has now been tagged the Trials of Life platform; because of it's four quadrants of varying height, it will appeal to all levels of riders.

Be well everyone and have fun!!

Welcome to Bike to Work Week 2009!

What a fantastic time of year to be out on the road, path, or trail, riding your bike. The weather (in BC anyway) is perfect for riding, the spring flowers are in full bloom with their fragrance’s blowing in the wind; delightful in every way.

May 11-17th is Bike to Work Week, a celebration to thank all the dedicated bicycle commuters and a promotion to recruit and convince potential cyclists to give it a try.

For all those folks who don’t need to commute to work every day (students, self employed, parents, etc.), we’re not leaving you out, this week is still for you because you still need to go places—to get groceries, mail a letter, pick up a movie rental, or visit a friend. So why not hop on the bike this week!

Are you training for a race or do you work out at a gym? If so, then save some time by getting your training in while you ride to work or as you ride to get all your errands done! Or, if you ride to recreate, then do it while en route to your family’s house instead of driving there. It just makes sense in so many ways!!

Now, for all the existing commuters, I think it’s safe to say we’d love to see more bikes on the road; but often when we’re racing to and from work, we enter in to battle mode, righteous bike against evil car. It’s so important to create a positive reputation for cyclists, so please obey the rules of the road, don’t blast through red lights and pull sketchy moves that freak out vehicle drivers. These may be potential cyclists, or people with political power (actually that’s all of us), so we need to be responsible; a nod, wave, or smile can go a very long way (for both the driver and you for that matter).

But sometimes vehicle drivers are irresponsible and ignorant, putting cyclists at risk. As a vehicle driver, I have been guilty of this myself—so I would still suggest that you maintain good form and trust that as long as they see you (or you make yourself noticed), that they’ll register their mistake and hopefully not do it again; but if instead you started waiving your finger, banging on their vehicle, and yelling profanities, it may trigger their road rage and possibly put them in the camp of belief that cyclists don’t belong on the road in the first place. Cycling advocacy groups don’t need any roadblocks in their already uphill battle for better cycling infrastructure! We need everyone on our side!!

Many cities have bicycle commuter stations set up along popular riding routes this week with free coffee, mechanical support, advocacy information, and general good cheer. In my own locale, Norco Bikes, Caps Westwood, and Secret Cycle will be on hand to help out at both the Port Moody and Coquitlam stations. Our local VACC committee, will also have fresh baked goods to share….I’m a sucker for baked goods!

So please take advantage of Bike to Work Week (or month) and spread the good word; this officially dedicated week gives you an excuse to start a conversation with your friends, family, co-workers, and yet-to-be-involved city councils. Share your experiences and speak about the myriad benefits that come along with a cycling lifestyle. Amen to the bicycle. Ride safely. Have Fun!!

          Hi Folks!

As part of the warm up for Bike to Work Week (May 11-17), I had planned a visit to a school to show them a few trials tricks, then take them for a ride. I certainly didn’t want to be a hypocrite and drive, but how was I going to get to the school with two different bikes? Knowing that my example is more powerful than my words, I decided to borrow a bike trailer from my friend Dimitri, and just tow my trials bike and high jump bar to the school. It was only about a 35 minute bike ride, so no big deal. I, along with 95 students, rode their bikes to school–NICE!! (See photo on my blog post).

If you’re a Vancouverite, the Trips for Kids DownBeat Slideshow and Silent Auction is coming up on May 7th. I’ll be doing a trials demo, Sterling Lorence and Kari Medig will present slideshows, and there will be some incredible auction items up for grabs. Check out all the specifics here!

The desire to progress and push my riding is at a momentary plateau; but I am inspired to progress and push my persona, and to use this brief period of my career in a responsible way to promote the joys of cycling and to contextualize these joys in a way that may help to serve the everyday challenges of life. This is the broad brushstroke of a vision I have for the next season or three or more. How these thought patterns evolve and materialize is yet to be determined, but I’m quite excited about the possibilities.

Mr. David Howard, author, father, and executive editor of Mountain Bike Magazine met me last year at the Mont-Sainte-Anne World Cup to hang out and spend some time talking; the resulting article has just been published in their June 2009 issue. The article is titled “Ryan Leech’s Toughest Trial”, and captures part of my thought process as described above. FYI, after the main body of the article, it is continued on Page 81, they just forgot to add the “continued on” part. Also, the articles referenced in the story titled BikEcology, were written for the now inoperative Mountain Biking Magazine, not Bike Magazine, but are nonetheless available on my blog.

The Sea Otter Classic in California has come and gone, so the riding season is officially on in North America (did it ever end in Vancouver?!). But for those that have winter knocking on the door, I hope you take advantage of some great rides before the weather finally turns.

Have fun!

          Hey Folks,

The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) is putting the pressure on John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC), to make the 2010 Winter Games carbon neutral. I recently added my signature, along with 70 other athletes, to reinforce the incredible importance such an action holds. Now it's your turn...

When I dream of the future, there is no issue of greater concern than that of climate change. VANOC has an opportunity to inspire the world by taking action, and frankly responsibility, for the immense carbon footprint such an event leaves in it's wake.

I am certain that in hindsight, such a decision will seem obvious to them; lets make sure they don't have any regrets. Taking responsibility for the environment is of utmost important, and we need to let them know we believe this, and feel strongly about it. So please follow this link, and lend your name to the cause, then pass it along to your friends. It's simple, it's fast, and if acted on, will have a long lasting and far reaching effect on the world.

Ryan

January is often a month of setting goals and thinking about the future; the current events of our time have prompted many to dig a little deeper, and really start to re-examining what the important things are in life. I did a little dreaming about the year ahead (well 11/12 of a year ahead) and wrote it down from the perspective of one year from now. You can have a read here if you like.

I started writing this newsletter while sitting in the passenger seat of the Norco Van while driving home northbound on the I-5 from California. I spend a week with the Norco PR Marketing guy Dustan Sept and team mate Darcy Turenne visiting mountain bike magazines and going riding with them. I thought it would be interesting for the readers of those magazines to see who was responsible for the pages they read, so I edited together a video blog from each to give you a taste:

If you live in Toronto and go to school, this message is for you. I’ll be heading your way to do demos at the Toronto International Bike Show, but while I’m in the area, I want to visit a school to perform a Trials of Life presentation. Which school that is I’ll leave up to you. <a href="http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Ryan-leech-trials-of-life-toronto-contest-2009.html"_blank">So check out the details and rules, and then let me know why your school is a good candidate for a free presentation.

My buddy Alex Lavigne (director of Crux) edited together a video from our visit to Galiano Island, just off the coast from Vancouver. It was a little trials riding retreat we did last fall, and it was a blast, hope you enjoy it!

All the best,

Since starting my website blog, my mailing list messages have dwindled. I have been enjoying the last week at home, so I thought I'd take advantage of this down time and send a hello out to all my friends on this list!

The mountain biking season is in full force; Crankworx, one of the premier mountain bike events around is about to pull in to full swing up in Whistler, and with all the commotion, it's easy to forget that the days are getting shorter, and the Summer holiday season will officially end for most in 3 weeks! So for all those folks who are busy with this and that, just wanted to remind you about the bike, and hope you can make some time to play before the Summer is out!

If you're heading up to Crankworx, come on by my trials show set up, I'll be performing at 1, 3, and 5 daily starting on August 13th. I'll be set up with the Norco Display at the Starbucks Plaza. If you're digging the trials, then be sure to watch the competition (trialsworx) on Saturday, there will be sections spread throughout Whistler village, it's a very spectator friendly sport.

CRUX has continued to sell well through the Summer months, and one of the most common questions I receive is about the soundtrack. Shawn Hall (aka Corduroy Kid) agreed to produce a soundtrack CD with this original music that is featured in Crux, it's now available for purchase ($10.00) at my online store. Hope you enjoy!

I just posted the latest BikEcology article on my blog. Here is the start of it:

Traffic in Vancouver, like most growing cities, is getting pretty intense. Combine that with rising fuel prices, and extreme suburb commuting, and you get some nasty driving attitudes and road rage. Serving humanity and the greater whole is a key element to finding purpose in ones life. I know an old man whose apparent purpose is to help reduce the stress of the car commuter. He’s the old man at the corner of the Hwy 1 on-ramp at Hastings St. in Vancouver.

You can choose to let the old man put a smile on your face, or choose to look down upon him, and ignore him, like many do with homeless people and beggers. When passing him one direction there is no light so I just whiz by, but he always makes eye contact while waving the peace sign; coming the other way, there’s a light, at that point I see him with his broom and dustpan sweeping the curb trash and debris, I see him smiling and waving, and only when signaled by a driver does he come to the window to accept tips. The times I have signaled him, he comes along with his reflective vest on, and shares a joke that always brings a smile to my face; job done.

I started thinking about street people, and that they probably have one of the smallest carbon footprints in western societies. Whether they are happy or not is of course in question. But in a culture that values material wealth more than anything, it might be hard for them to be content with the few, if any, possessions they have. However many world travelers often remark that the happiest people they see are the ones in cultures where there is little material wealth. When I was in Peru filming for Kranked 3, we came across a small village, everyone was gathered around the fire, and they invited us over to join. They lived in little huts, no electricity or plumbing, but they weren’t embarrassed, they gave us nothing but welcoming smiles and great hospitality, and there was this unforgettable feeling of calm contentment and connectiveness. In a documentary I just watched called “Ten Questions with the Dalai Lama”, he suggested that the more you have materially, the more you h
ave to worry about; I can certainly see the truth in that....

Happy Summer Everyone!

As seen in Mountain Biking Magazine...

By the time this article goes to print, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will have shown the special edit of my segment from Kranked 6, "Trial and Error", to over 100,000 people. In this film I share my instinctual feelings of concern when seeing or thinking about clear cutting a forest.

I often show this video at my school presentations, and while on tour up in Northern BC where forestry supports a large chunk of the population, I began feeling a little sheepish about showing it, as I certainly am no expert on the topic. In the film I reference the particular zone of forest where my trail is built, "this is one of the last remaining sections of mid elevation old growth on the BC coast, and it's slated for clear cut." Then one of the analogies I make in the film is that "it seems to me that clear cutting is exactly like a crash, and they've done it time and time again, and perhaps haven't learned from their mistakes." I didn't want to insult those in BC that base their livelihood on the industry and give them a bad reputation from my generalizing statements. Perhaps they have learned, and perhaps there are some ecologically sound logging practices in effect.

I needed to find out some more information, so while up in Northern BC....Click here for the complete article

Ahh, I love all the cafe's with wireless internet these days; the one I'm in right now is in downtown Victoria, BC. So while I have the connection, I thought I would share my latest 'BikEcology' article from Mountain Biking Magazine titled "Make a Good Ride Better".

Many often miss a very important and joyous part of riding. Whether you’re racing your friends up or down the hill, annoyed at your bike because it’s not running smooth, maybe you’re stressed about something at work, or busy worrying about that stunt ahead and the one you biffed a few minutes ago, who knows, but it results in missing out on this gift, yes, that present moment when you can truly experience Nature. It’s the fleeting experience of being in Nature, not doing in nature.

This is similar to yoga, the most important part of the practice isn’t that crazy balance posture you pulled, it’s savasana, or corpse pose as it’s often called. So when you’re out on your next ride in the woods, take a second to feel the power of Nature, experience the presence of the trees or the desert rock, feel the wind or rain hitting your face, and just be, if only for a few moments. In the past I have been in some of the most incredible natural settings and not truly realized, recognized, or appreciated it; perhaps I took it for granted. Click here for the complete article

          Hey Folks,

Because I keep an active blog, I thought I'd pass along a few links to certain articles and stories I posted recently, for instance my feelings on performing while being sick. Or like last week when I was fortunate to be present at live speeches by Bill Clinton and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., you can click on their names to read my review of what they had to say, along with this link to see a little video montage of the other things I saw while attending the Green Living Show in Toronto.

If you live in Vancouver, I definitely encourage you to click on this link to learn more about the Trips for Kids Fundraiser happening on May 8th. We'll be showing The Collectives new film "Seasons", there will be a silent auction, and a slideshow by Ian Hylands. Nice!!!

Have an awesome week everyone!
